Amazing Community Efforts

Hello Alamo!

Things are getting hard around here.

I haven’t delved into the whole PNM business, but I am keeping an eye on it. I know many of you have gotten absolutely ridiculous charges after supposed staff shortages led to them using a faulty technology, and I have no idea how to begin to even address that. If you’re on Facebook, there’s a group trying to collect members and stories; hopefully you can find relief and/or a solution there. All *I* can say is I’m sorry and I hope every price-gouging corporation goes bankrupt and faces consequences for putting a dollar above people.

Knowing how many things are stacked against us can feel pretty awful. I personally started to feel that a long time ago. The comeback of this blog came out of all of that.

Even then, I was probably a lot less pessimistic about this city, its politicians, its very-loud-minority values, but I just had a feeling that at the end of the day, all we have is community. We have to help each other to help ourselves, because no one’s swooping in to do that for us.

As prices continue to skyrocket for utilities, and gas, and groceries, and everything else we rely on to have a decent life, we need to start thinking about better ways to get our needs met.

Luckily there are a few solutions. I try my best to cover them here. One of which is the Alamogordo Farmer’s Market at Washington Park. All month I’ve been trying to find a way to renew interest because y’all… It’s honestly really amazing that we have a resource like that here. Do you know how close we are to being a complete food desert?

As you know, not every farmer’s market accepts benefits like SNAP/EBT. There are requirements that a market has to meet in order to qualify for that, and the organizers of this one have worked their butts off to make sure it does. Yesterday, Courtney also posted that they’ve entered a program that will let us buy proteins at a discounted rate as long as the vendor has the training for it. The amount of effort that goes into making sure we can all stay nourished blows my mind, and I’m so grateful that we have people in Alamogordo willing to do that.

Though this farmer’s market doubles your benefits throughout its run from June to October, tomorrow is the last day it will triple those benefits. The market is located in the park, right off of 1st Street, and opens at 10am. Please join me in stocking up, and,
