For All of Our Benefit

Hello Alamo!

Local farmers are really important.

As I said last week, they make the chain between you and your food much shorter, which cuts down the likelihood of foodborne illness. They intimately know what it takes to grow food in your local climate. They are part of “shopping local” and keep money flowing through your local economy instead of padding some CEO’s pocket a hundred miles away. And anyone trying to help meet your basic needs is A-Okay in my book;

I’ve also written quite a bit about why the farmer’s market at Washington Park is my personal favorite. No, it’s not just because it’s run by two of my favorite community-focused people in this city; it’s because it’s the only farmer’s market in Otero County that accepts SNAP/EBT benefits.

Accepting these benefits also means that it can accept both Double Up Food Bucks and SUN Bucks, the summer food program for students.

But the benefits I really want to hammer on today are the Bonus Bucks. They work alongside the DUFB, meaning right now you could spend $10 in SNAP benefits at the Alamogordo Farmer’s Market at Washington Park and go home with $30-worth of fresh produce and food staples to feed your loved ones.

The Bonus Bucks are only eligible for use for a limited time; the last market they can triple your purchase at is on Saturday, August 29th.

I implore you to take advantage of it these next two weeks, and,

Salud!
