Hello Alamo!
This time I was absent because I was helping care for kids in my community, but I’m sorry about last week. Every Wednesday I get about 10 or so page views and it reminds me I’m actually doing something worthwhile, so thank you for the guilt? Haha.
As for this week, I actually took a nap.
Otero Artspace has been an event space and available to rent since 2019. In the years since, it has been host to belly dance classes, local artist exhibits, film screenings, live music, and of course Rebel Music Theatre’s performances.
If you have been privy to my calendar when I was better about updating it, you would also see that the space regularly puts on painting classes for both kids and adults, as well as other crafting events. See full list here.
If there is one place in town that really amplifies and fulfills the need for creative expression and joy through art, it would be here.
Otero Artspace opened as a 501c3 non-profit to:
-“Provide a venue for artistic and cultural exhibition
-Strengthen and expand the arts community in Otero County and South – Central New Mexico
-Enhance the quality of life in Otero County
-Promote economic development through the arts”
As I will keep saying until I am blue in the face, there is a lot of fighting back we need to be doing. Just this week, for example, the community gardens lost a grant due to budget cuts in the federal sector. We cannot fully shield ourselves from what the nepo baby is doing in DC, but we can work with what we have; each other. And the only way to sustain this fight is by finding little bits of joy to keep fighting for.
Will Otero Artspace be impacted by budget cuts as well? I’m expecting most things that make life even remotely enjoyable will be. That’s even more reason to lend our support however we can. One way is to help them meet their goal for volunteer hours here.
Speaking of joy through art mediums, I also just want to remind you that the production of “Big Fish” will take place this and next weekend at the Flickinger Center. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the box office.
Until next time,
Salud!
