Happy Spring!?!

Hello Alamo!

The past 2 weeks, I’ve had very little in me between socializing and celebrating and hosting family. Even today I’m having to stretch a bit, but later this week is the vernal equinox. Happy Spring!!!

I have really exciting updates about the community gardens coming your way.

First, though, I want to get a little whiny and personal about why I don’t help out as much as I’d like to, beyond having some limited mobility.

I do make a point to help water one of the gardens at least once a month. I have a pretty wretched black thumb, and I’d prefer this endeavor to actually thrive past its successful 2 years lol. I think watering and my frequent blogging about one of my favorite local resources is pretty helpful. Still I wish I could do more.

I have *horrendous* allergies to-at this point-I’m assuming every type of pollen.

On the days I do water, I make sure to take my pill early. I put in allergy eye drops and make sure they coat my entire cornea. I pack up my nasal spray for when I need a second spritz. Thankfully I’ve only had them twice, but I need to figure out how to prepare if I get hives again. I am all ears to any advice, by the way.

Through the rabbit holes I’ve found myself in, I don’t think it’s going to get any better anytime soon. With climate change heating up the earth, plants start blooming outside of their usual timeframe. On top of that, there has been a pattern of planting pollen-producing male trees instead of largely fruit-bearing (and pollen-removing) female trees in public spaces. I hope the pollinators are happy at least.

This is a big deal for me and many allergy-sufferers’ health out there. Luckily, this is a community. We all have different abilities, circumstances, resources, etc. I do what I can in the hopes that people who can do more take on the mantle to make sure our neighbors have access to food.

Reminder: the 2 free gardens in Alamogordo are located across the street from the Dudley Community Center on Maryland Ave. and behind the 900 block of New York Ave. The free garden in Tularosa is located in James Vigil Park.

Because it will be used for teaching purposes, there is a small yearly fee to harvest from the garden/farm behind Grace Methodist Church. I will update when applications for that are open this season.

With Many Hands, together, we can all be provided for.

Salud.
