To continue my season of singing the Alamogordo Farmers’ Market at Washington Park‘s praises, I would like to inform you of a program Courtney signed up for through the New Mexico Farmers’ Marketing Association.
The program is called Protein Plus, and it’s a great new opportunity for this city to have access to healthy foods,
While the Double Up Food Bucks cover fresh fruits and vegetables, these aren’t the only nutrients our bodies need to stay functional and happy. The Protein Plus program allows qualifying New Mexicans to buy meats, nuts, and eggs from vendors at a 50% discount.
Approved as a DUFB expansion in the 2026 legislative session, Protein Plus is available to all SNAP recipients. It’s also available to anyone experiencing food insecurity, on SSI disability, receiving Turquoise Care Medicaid, caring for children with extra meal support (Head Start, At-Risk After-School Meals, etc.), seniors receiving food assistance (such as Meals On Wheels, Congregate Meals), or are active duty military or veteran.
There will be a booth at the market where community members can fill out some paperwork to receive a loyalty card. They can then use it at eligible vendors to get their half-off discount, which cannot exceed $20 per transaction. In other words, from each vendor selling meats, nuts, and eggs, you can purchase up to *$40-worth* of protein to feed your loved ones.
This program does require training for each vendor who wants to participate, so make sure to ask instead of assuming they can offer the discount. And as far as I can tell, no documentation of proof is required to sign up for the loyalty card, but I will update if I find out otherwise.
The Alamogordo Farmer’s Market at Washington Park takes place every Saturday from 10am to noon until October 24th. I hope to see you there this weekend!
