Hello, Alamo!
It is just about 2 weeks out from the big (mainstream) day, and I hope everyone is remaining happy. healthy, and stress-free.
Here, we got the lights up outside, most of my shopping was done locally last weekend, and the tree will go up some time this week.
Something you may not know about me is that, while my spiritual path doesn’t particularly include Christianity anymore, Christmas is still my favorite holiday; it always has been.
Lights, decorations, gifting, baking, carols… they all make winter very special for me. Beyond that, though, I love this time of year because just about everyone acts especially generous and charitable.
I’m almost 35 years old, born female, disabled, queer, and POC, so of course I’ve been through some stuff. I wouldn’t say my not-so-great experiences have rendered Christmas less magical, but I realize what I mainly like about it is people just being good to each other. I would like that all year round, not just during December.
I restarted this blog a little over a year ago because I’d looked so much into physical health, and over and over it seemed like no one was focusing on the elephant in the room: physical health doesn’t mean a whole lot without mental health. Personally I think the biggest reason for our mental health going sideways (in a way that we can actually control) is that as social beings, we’re scrounging to reclaim what it means to be in community.
Feeding each other, clothing each other, bringing each other joy and comfort and warmth during the cold months, all of that is community care. Over the past 15 months, I’ve been lucky enough to meet way more people doing that work than I expected through trying to come up with topics to blog about.
I guess this post was just a long-winded way to say that this season informs what’s most important to me, we’ll all get through these harsh times because we have each other (I promise), and most importantly I’m still here!
I have been slacking, especially for those of you who don’t follow my page on Facebook. I plan to remedy that a bit by hopefully updating my website to include new categories by the new year, and by bringing you a listicle this weekend to support our still magical yet humble holidays.
Until then,
Salud!
