Hello Alamo!
I had a plan this month that did not pan out, then the beginning of the holidays got busy.
Last time I mentioned the importance of shopping locally. Keeping the money flowing in our own local economy will be very helpful for us.
Tomorrow is Small Business Saturday, an initiative created in 2010 by American Express to help struggling small businesses, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce website. It’s also the date set for the Mainstreet Makeover Grand Opening!
In September of 2024 (according to other sources {shout-out to 2ndLife Media!}, it feels much longer personally), the City started diverting traffic to begin construction on the 800 and 900 blocks of New York Ave. After some time consulting with the community about their needs, non-profits, and considerable support from our new Mayor-Elect Sharon McDonald, this construction has consisted of replacing water- and sewer lines, art installations, introducing new businesses such as the RAD Retrocade and Oppenheimer Gasthaus, and something I’m personally looking forward to, better accessibility in the form of better benches and ADA-compliant sidewalks.
Among all the excitement is the understanding that the local businesses downtown, while still open throughout this project, have felt the weight of the streets being blocked off for over a year. Alamogordo Mainstreet is making it a point to call out that they have been trucking along for us, and it’s been time for us to be there for them.
I unfortunately won’t be at the event as I have a friendsgiving to attend. but the festivities will begin at 5:30 pm. Enjoy, and,
Salud!
