Humble Holidays?

Hello Alamo!

I haven’t posted in a hot minute to the blog. The schedule is on fire and in the bin at this point; sorry! Mostly it’s because I have been reacting to the looming SNAP crisis by pushing out different ideas and resources, as well as sharing the different local businesses who were willing to step up by providing free food to the community.

Now that the crisis is over, besides SNAP being a thing in a country with more than enough to spare, I’m a bit more calm and regulated. I still urge you to help if you can. That’s what community does.

Veering in a somewhat different direction, the holidays are coming up.

Personally, knowing the Indigenous history of this country, I’m not much of a fan of Thanksgiving. I am, however, a forever fan of food and of the generosity and gratitude tied to the holiday. Even more so, I have loved Christmas my entire life in large part due to the goodwill that was always linked to the winter holidays and the (theoretically up until maybe 6 years ago for Alamo) colder part of the year.

I understand other people have different reasons for liking this time of year, but I would like us all to contend with the reality of the moment and realize that we’re all struggling. If you have kids, I know there’s a dilemma between wanting to give them a good childhood and informing them about the world and its toughness. Especially this year, please try to find a way to make the moments special without spending yourself out of house and home.

Having said that, there has been a lot of pressure surrounding the holidays for a very long time. It’s hard to do something like a no-consumption Christmas for most people.

I think it would be great to, instead of supporting chains with headquarters hundreds of miles away, give back to the community that for all its faults has our backs when we need it most.

I try to encourage people to shop local as much as they can nowadays anyway, but doing so feels much more important this year. Low-consumption, generosity, and local business are what I plan to focus on until 2026, and I hope you will tune in.

Until next time,

Salud!
