Hello Alamo!

This week, I had a lovely email interview with someone who regularly volunteers at Otero Artspace. Once again, I present her words unaltered as they do far more justice than I could. Enjoy!

1. How long have you lived here?

My husband and I moved here in January of 2018 from the Seattle area, so 8 years.

2. When did you first hear about Otero Arts Inc. and its mission?

Probably in 2022. I have friends who were involved with founding it and they made me aware of the wonderful mission of the Artspace.

3. I saw online that you volunteer for the art exhibits quite a bit. What have your experiences been sitting the gallery?

I have loved every minute of sitting the gallery! I get to sit surrounded by gorgeous art in the beautiful, historic Woman’s Club building and get to meet the friendliest, kindest folks visiting the space. I enjoy chatting with them about the art and what brought them to the exhibit. I have made so many new friends this way!

3b. Do the exhibits tend to draw the same crowds?

The crowds can vary based on the exhibit/event. For example, when we have exhibits of art from school children, we get a whole different, younger group of visitors including the children and their parents and friends. We also showcase the art of Veterans, which brings their families to the gallery. Of course, Otero Arts also hosts concerts, musicals, dance classes, poetry, fiction and non-fiction readings which bring a diverse group of visitors to the gallery.

4. How important do you think it is to have somewhere like Otero Artspace to express
yourself/showcase art to your community?

I think it is vital for a community to have such a space to come and view and experience exhibits showcasing local artists’ work which reflect the cultural identity of the community. Otero Arts also offers free monthly workshops for children and adults which can provide a creative, therapeutic outlet for those attending. I have enjoyed seeing the excitement and pride of the children when they hold up their beautiful creations.

5. Is there anything else you would like to tell me about volunteering at this space?

I just would like to encourage anyone who lives in or visits the area, who are interested in the arts, to come and experience what Otero Arts has to offer the community. And also to volunteer to help support the local artists and Otero Arts because it is so important for it to continue to thrive here.

Again, if you’re interested in helping Otero Artspace meet its quota for volunteer hours, click here!

I’m currently planning on keeping up with this streak of the arts, interspersed with community garden and farmer’s market through the end of the season.

I will also *try* to be better about sharing all volunteer opportunities in town on social media and my calendar.

Until next time,

Salud!
