Hello Alamo!
I already wrote about this, and the funding for benefits may have changed between now and then, but there’s an update!
Alamogordo Farmer’s Market has come to Washington Park since June every Saurday morning to sell the community local produce, baked goods, and other treats.
Unfortunately monsoon season has been pretty relentless for the past few weeks, and the first one was cancelled out of an abundance of caution, but AMF will be putting on their first evening market tonight at 6pm.
Personally, between healing, allergies, and a lack of transportation, I haven’t had the chance to make it out yet. However, the main connection I have to the event on the vendor’s side is Courtney McCary-Squyres. Together with her husband James, she not only helps start up and maintain the community gardens here in Alamo, but also runs SquyreStudios Micro-farm.
By supporting this farmer’s market, we are investing in our local economy. The difference between supporting local farmers and a chain grocery store is that, with the latter, that money is just going up the ranks to maintain the chain of stores and line the pockets of some CEO. With the former, the money is going into the pocket of people who live in our community and spend that money locally, meaning it will actually stay here. We deserve an economy that supports us.
I will update this post as soon as I find out exact dates, but both the Saturday morning and Wednesday evening markets will happen each week until October. I hope to see you there one day, but until I can make it out, please take advantage of this!
Until next time,
Salud!
